Guitar Lessons

The Classical Guitar Store offers lessons in all styles of guitar playing; Rock, Blues, Jazz, Folk, Pop, Classical and Flamenco. With a staff of six teachers we provide expert instruction in all playing styles. Each member of our staff is a professional performer of the style he or she teaches and has had long performing and teaching experience.

Dave D'Arville is a Philadelphia-based guitarist, composer and songwriter. He holds a B.Mus. in Guitar Performance from Temple University where he studied with Greg Kettinger, Peter Bernstein and Allen Krantz. Paul M. Eaton is leader of the rock band PhunkyMan who can be seen in clubs and concert stages worldwide. An accomplished live and studio musician, Paul can be heard on many recorded releases from his band and an extended list of others (see his site for details Paul has a degree from Hartt School of Music and sits on the Board of directors for the Philadelphia Boys Choir. Paul is also the Fine Arts Department Chair at Girard College.

Brendan Evans holds a B.Mus. degree from Oberlin Conservatory where he studied with Steven Aron and an M.A. from San Francisco Conservatory where he studied with David Tannenbaum. He also spent a year in Andalucia, Spain, studying flamenco. Brendan won 8 consecutive prizes in guitar competitions in the US and Canada, including several 1st prizes. Dan Hanrahan has a degree in Jazz Performance from Temple University. Since graduating in 2009, he has been performing regularly as a leader and a sideman at venues such as Chris' Jazz Cafe, Time, The Deer Head Inn, The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, and many others. Dan has worked extensively with many musicians from Philadelphia's jazz scene, and has performed with Terell Stafford and Tim Warfield. Recognized as an excellent classical guitarist, Dan's versatility is also demonstrated by his knowledge of rock, folk and blues. To visit Dan's website, click here.

William Newman has a guitar performance degree from Temple University where he studied with Peter Segal. He performs as a soloist and in a variety of ensembles, including the Mascaro-Newman Flute and Guitar Duo, the Penn-Newman Guitar Duo, Network For New Music and the Newman-Ghezzi Duo. In addition, he has performed with the Opera Company of Philadelphia at the Academy of Music and in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. William has worked to expand the guitar chamber music repertoire and has published transcriptions for flute and guitar by Mozart, Schumann, Dvorak and Villa-Lobos.



John Penn, recognized as the best classical and flamenco guitar teacher in the area, is a well-known performer of both classical and flamenco guitar. A member of the Penn-Newman Guitar Duo, he holds a B.A. degree in music from Rutgers University and studied classical guitar for many years with William Viola. Ryan Procini has experience in classical, jazz, and rock styles. He has a degree in classical guitar performance from Temple University, where he studied with Allen Krantz. Ryan has also studied jazz guitar with Tom Giacabetti. He is a member of the rock band Super Consumers, with whom he performs around the Philadelphia and New York areas.


Phil Smith is a seasoned musician with experience in many styles and genres. While in high school he joined the Paul Green School of Rock, touring the US and Germany with original members of Frank Zappa's band. Phil went on to study classical guitar with Stephen Aron at the Oberlin Conservatory. Returning to Philadelphia, he continued to study with Lukasz Kuropaczewski and Gyan Riley. He has performed extensively with rock, pop, gospel, R&B, and world music groups. Phil is also an accomplished music producer, composer and recording engineer and has worked in studios with some of the world's finest musicians.
